Anti-depressants can unfortunately lead to Birth Defects

SC Injury Attorneys
Antidepressant drugs have gotten a great deal of negative feedback recently, given the numerous possible side effects which can be serious and possibly life threatening.
In addition to the risk of possible unintended effects that can occur from antidepressant prescription drugs, women taking these drugs during pregnancy put the well-being of their child at risk, because the drugs|medication are associated with a wide range of possible birth defects.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are prescribed by doctors to treat anxiety, depression as well as other mental health disorders. SSRIs help alleviate these issues by increasing the level of serotonin, a natural substance produced in the brain associated with feelings of happiness and well-being.
Many women who are prescribed these medications are sometimes advised to continue taking them during their pregnancy. However, antidepressants such as Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac have been associated with a number of birth defects when used during pregnancy.
Zoloft has been linked to cases of spina bifida, heart defects, club foot, cleft lip/palate, and limb defects, while Prozac has been associated with an increased possibility for autism.
Paxil has been tied to an increased risk of cardiovascular, brain and abdominal malformations. Most concerning may be the cardiovascular malformations that can result in the child being unable to obtain enough oxygen, requiring hospitalization.
In some cases, these antidepressants may result in premature birth. As many as 10 to 20 % of prematurely born children may pass away after birth; survivors face possible deafness and neurological problems.
The prescription drug industry has produced numerous life saving medications.
However, in a race to get their drugs to market, many pharmaceutical companies ignore or do not anticipate the crippling side effects associated with medications which later lead to injury and even death.

While the U.S. government is forced to spend billions of dollars on illegal drug interdiction each and every year in an attempt to combat the problem, more US citizens die each year as the result of the side effects of legally prescribed drugs than illegal ones.
